Mardi Gras

February is the month for Mardi Gras (or Carnival). This year Mardi Gras falls on Tuesday, February 12. Also called Fat Tuesday, this day is always the day before Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent (a Roman Catholic observance). In New Orleans, celebrations have been held every day since January 19. The festivities include amazing parade floats, elaborate costumes, lots of beads, music, and food, food, food!

In the United States, Mardi Gras was first celebrated by French settlers in the Louisiana Territory of the United States in the 1700’s. They held street celebrations and masked balls in honor of the day. Under Spanish rule the celebrations were stopped, but resumed when Louisiana became part of the United States. The first official Mardi Gras parade in New Orleans was held in 1827. The tradition has lasted to this day.

Several areas in the United States host Carnival, but the most famous is held in New Orleans. Around the world, the most famous celebrations are in Venice, Italy and in Brazil.

You can experience the festivities and music of Mardi Gras here and here.

  1. I usually likes the parades. I like the different elaborate costumes, mask, necklaces. The nusic. In my country, we also have paredes with the Diablos cojuelos. Mardi gras also have much depravity and problems created for the same reasons. But, the colors, people, different meals and music, make it fun, and funny.

  3. In Poland we also celebrate carnival, but it looks different than in the US or Brazil. Instead of parades people go to the parties. Also children celebrate carnival in their school - there is usually one day appointed by teacher when children dress up costumes (no scary ones) and play games. It is fun - I always liked carnival in the school.

  6. The Bus=j'r's is an annual celebrations of Hungary. The celebration features Bus=s and includes folkmusic, masquerading, parades and dancing. Bus=j'r's lasts six days, usually during February. In the older, less popular story, the bus=s are scaring away not the Turks but Winter itself. This time we have also every kindergarden and school have a fancy dress dance.I love too parades and masks.

  8. WOW!
This is thorough a celebration. Where the musical, dancer strees, custom and
simbolic color made a cultural expresion. Diversity it is a party where the
people are the main protagonists. The stress and decks it self out to receive
national and foreign tourists. Mardi Grass is full of secrets. It self is mix
Multicultural, mithological, history and religious."This is really celebration".
